Other Air Pollution Agencies to Watch
California Air Resources Board (CARB)
Where SCAQMD regulates local sources of pollution, CARB creates plans to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions, including creating regulations for cars and trucks like setting the phaseout of gas-powered vehicles. CARB has been pushing for VMT reduction targets but needs more support from legislators to put those plans into action. Of particular note are the agency’s scoping plans which create sweeping strategies for achieving long-range goals like transitioning to a zero-emission transportation system statewide.
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP)
Southern California Edison (SoCal Edison)
California Energy Commission (CEC)
The major energy providers for the Southern California region, LADWP and SoCal Edison, have goals to move to 100 percent renewable energy, although they both operate fossil fuel power plants. There has been pressure to close these plants, as well as storage facilities like the Aliso Canyon facility, home to the largest gas leak in U.S. history. And at the state level, the CEC is also steering California towards a 100 percent renewable energy future.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The EPA oversees CARB and SCAQMD and creates federal rules and regulations to reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and a wide range of pollutants. The agency also directly regulates interstate transportation, including ships, railroads, and planes, and needs to set stricter policies to reduce emissions from those sources nationwide.
